The Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) was a voluntary program of the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service that offered landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance wetlands on their property. This program offered landowners an opportunity to establish long-term conservation and wildlife practices and protection. The goal of NRCS was to achieve the greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program.
Cedarcrest has approximately 80 acres of WRP land. This area borders the East Fork of Shoal Creek, part of the Shoal Creek flyway. Originally developed as a wetland in 2000, the property was overrun by willow, poplar and maple trees. In addition, the water control devices and levees were in need of maintenance and repair. Repairs and remediation were begun in 2016 and will be ongoing until complete.
More information on the success of the WRP efforts can be found at https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb1045079.pdf.
